I was born, raised and educated in Hull and the East Riding. I'm rooted in this region and I understand the needs and challenges we face.
My grandparents' families came from the rural East Riding and the city of Hull. They knew poverty and working class deprivation, but their aspiration for their children - my parents' generation - meant mine was the first generation to attend university.
Unlike a recent Conservative prime minister, I was proud of the opportunities my local community and my comprehensive school gave me, and grateful to Labour for making them possible.
The support and encouragement of my brilliant German teacher helped me gain a place at Cambridge where I read Modern Languages.
My family has given me a legacy of service to the community and the nation through their local churches and community organisations, and as frontline workers or members of the armed forces. My father served in the Royal Navy for 15 years before retraining as a teacher. My parents also ran the local independent youth orchestra for over twenty years and I am now a trustee of three arts charities.
The global Covid pandemic was one of the most devastating crises we have faced in recent years. To help protect my community, I trained as a vaccinator working for the NHS at vaccine centres and mobile units across East Yorkshire.
Winning for Labour means getting out on the doorstep and taking our message to where it will be heard.
We have so many assets in the region - including our people - through which we can
deliver on Labour's policies, especially for Great British Energy. As Mayor I will bring key
industries and stakeholders together to commit to a plan for regional growth.
I have already met with representatives of our green energy and decarbonisation industries around the Humber. At Labour conference this year I talked to heads of the onshore wind industry about how this could benefit our region through investment in green energy.
Regional government must play a central role in connecting labour skills policy with its ambitions for social mobility and local regeneration. As metro mayor, I will use my adult education budget to deliver access to training for good quality, well paid jobs we will attract to the region.
As metro mayor I can improve local bus services and ensure they remain affordable for both our rural and urban residents.
Improving the speed, reliability and frequency of rail links will improve opportunities for work and commerce.
Over 37% of homes in the private rented sector in our region are non-decent - the highest proportion in England. We need to tackle this and ensure Labour's plans for building new homes is delivered sustainably across our communities, not focussed where higher prices benefit the developers.
I grew up involved in local music and I have seen the benefits the arts bring to children, adults and communities alike.
The arts contribute over £125bn to our economy and employ over 2 million. I want to bring more of that investment and employment to our region.
We have seen how vulnerable Hull and East Riding to flooding.
I will work with the government to bolster resilience and better protect our communities from flooding and coastal erosion through additional financial support to our communities.
"I worked on Margaret’s parliamentary campaigns in 2015 and 2024. She has already shown she has the skills and experience to win over voters and deliver for Labour. I’ve seen the work Margaret has done with our MPs on issues that matter to local communities. She will achieve even more for Hull and East Riding as Mayor."
